About Health Canada AI

Where artificial intelligence meets the human side of care.

Health Canada AI is a collaborative centre that brings the promise of artificial intelligence into everyday clinical practice. We work beside clinicians, researchers and institutions across the country, turning careful research into tools and knowledge that help people receive better care.

Our story

A centre built for collaboration, not for commerce.

Health Canada AI began with a simple belief. Artificial intelligence should serve the people who give and receive care, and it should do so with honesty, patience and respect. We watched remarkable research appear every year, yet very little of it reached the clinics, hospitals and communities that needed it most. We set out to close that distance and to keep it closed.

So we built a place where knowledge moves freely. Researchers share what they discover. Clinicians describe what they truly need. Institutions bring the questions that matter to real patients. Together we shape ideas into tools that people can rely on, and we test those tools with the same care we would want for our own families.

We are not a company that sells products. We are a community of people who study, build and teach. Everything we create is meant to be shared, understood and improved by others. That openness is the foundation of who we are, and it guides every decision we make and every door we open.

What we believe

Our vision, our mission and our purpose.

Three ideas sit at the centre of everything we do. They shape our research, our partnerships and the way we treat one another every single day.

Vision

A future where AI supports every step of care

We imagine a healthcare system where artificial intelligence supports every step of care, from the first question a patient asks to the final decision a clinician makes. Care that arrives sooner, reads more clearly and treats every person with dignity.

Mission

Bringing research into real practice

Our mission is to carry advanced research into real practice, to give institutions the tools and understanding they need, and to champion artificial intelligence that is safe, fair and worthy of the trust patients place in their caregivers.

Purpose

Making sure progress reaches everyone

We exist to make certain that progress reaches the people it is meant to help. As medicine moves forward, we work so that no clinic, no researcher and no community is left waiting on the sidelines.

Our values

The principles that guide our work.

These are the promises we make to the people we serve and to one another. They are easy to say and harder to live, and we work to honour them in every project we take on.

Integrity

We hold ourselves to a high standard of honesty. We say what we know, we admit what we do not, and we let clear evidence lead the way.

Collaboration

The best ideas come from many minds. We build with clinicians, researchers and institutions rather than building for them from a distance.

Rigour

Every method we use is tested with patience and care, because the wellbeing of real patients depends on getting the smallest details right.

Responsibility

We weigh the effect of our work on real lives, and we design with safety, fairness and privacy placed firmly at the centre.

Openness

Knowledge grows when it is shared. We publish, we teach and we welcome questions from anyone who wants to learn alongside us.

Impact

We measure our success by the good it brings to patients, to clinicians and to the wider community, and by very little else.

How we work

A clear path from research to real care.

Good work follows a rhythm. Ours moves from listening, to study, to building, to steady support, and finally to teaching, so that every tool we create is understood and every partner is ready.

Step 01

Listen

We begin by listening to the people who deliver care, learning where artificial intelligence can truly help and where it should quietly stay out of the way.

Step 02

Research

We study the hardest questions with method and patience, drawing on the newest science and testing every idea against the needs of real practice.

Step 03

Build

We turn our findings into practical tools, shaped closely by the clinicians and institutions who will one day place their trust in them.

Step 04

Support

We stay close as our partners adopt new tools, offering guidance, training and a steady hand at every stage of the way.

Step 05

Educate

We share what we learn in the open, so that knowledge spreads freely and the whole community grows stronger together.

Our impact

A small centre with a wide reach.

Every number here stands for people helped, questions answered and care made a little better across the country. Behind each figure are clinicians, researchers and patients whose days we hope to improve.

Who we serve

Built for everyone who touches care.

Our doors are open to the many people who make health possible. Each one brings something we need, and each one deserves technology that treats them with respect.

Clinicians

Doctors, nurses and care teams who want tools that respect their time and strengthen the judgement they already carry.

Researchers

Scientists and students in search of partners, shared data and a community that welcomes their curiosity.

Institutions

Hospitals, clinics and health systems that are ready to adopt artificial intelligence with confidence and care.

Patients and communities

The people at the heart of it all, who deserve care that is safe, fair and always within reach.

Our team

The people behind the mission.

Our work is led by researchers and clinicians who share one goal, to see artificial intelligence used wisely and kindly in the service of health. Behind them stands a wider community of collaborators, students and partners who make everything we do possible.

Dr. Sarah Mitchell

Chief Executive Officer

She guides our vision and keeps our work grounded in the needs of real patients and the people who care for them.

Dr. Michael Thompson

Chief AI Scientist

He leads the science behind our tools, building systems that support clinical decisions with clarity and rigour.

Dr. Emily Carter

Chief Innovation Officer

She turns research into practice, helping our partners bring new ideas safely into the flow of everyday care.
